Department of Monument Protection is part of Administration for Culture.

State preservation of monuments and historic buildings was founded in Hamburg already in 1920. It is based today on, in the meantime several times amended, monument protection law. According to it, cultural monuments are to be studied scientifically, to be protected and to be preserved, as well as to be involved in urban city development.

Due to constitutive monument legislation there are two categories of monuments in Hamburg: historic monuments are listed in "Verzeichnis der erkannten Denkmäler" (“Register of Recognized Historic Monuments”), the list of historic monuments includes monuments that were placed under protection by effective administrative act. It is the task of Inventory Department to determine the property of historic monument. The historic monument of one whole city district were published in so-called „Denkmaltopografie“ (Historic Monument Topography), particularly monument categories or themes in „workbooks on preservation of historic monument in Hamburg“ .

Consulting owners of historic monuments in case of restoration and conversion plans is the main task of Department of Architectural and Art Monument Preservation. Additional expenditures related to historic monuments can be subsidized; under certain conditions required costs for preservation or sensible usage of architectural monuments can be amortized according to §§ 7i, 10f, 11b and 10g Einkommensteuergesetz (income tax law).

The Department of Monument protection has its own restoration workshops, extensive construction and history of arts reference library  and picture archive, that contains over 700.000 motives beginning with Great Fire 1842 up to the present times.
